How easy is it to start a business? January 18, 2008

For me this should be one of the easiest questions to answer!

Basically, it’s as easy as you make it — well for us it was anyway, lol!

If you know what you want to do, starting an online business should really just fall into place — if you really have to go against the grain as it were to get a business going, then personally I don’t think you should be trying that type of business …. there are many occasions when that has been wrong for sure … but if your going to operate the right kind of business then it will come easily to you I think.

I think the easiest business to start is one that begins with a hobby — why? … well, because you already do the core of the business every time you do your hobby, and because you enjoy your hobby, it makes starting a business from it that much easier!

Now, if your sat there thinking to yourself “I have no idea what kind of business I can start” then your not ready to be starting your own business, simple — and you need to go get yourself a hobby!

Also if you only want to start a business to make money, then forget that too —- haha, I can hear them now “Start a business NOT to make money” you must be nuts!!

Yep, that’s right, DO NOT go looking to start a business ‘just’ to make money, I think it will fail and you will end up ‘losing’ money, why? …. because your heart won’t be in it, and it won’t be what you ‘really’ want to do.

I think one of the things that is wrong with ‘business’ today is that a lot of them are only ‘in business’ to make money, and that is wrong — a businesses first port of call should be to give the customer what they want, something they need, and then if they make money from it, all the better!

Something funny usually happens when you give a customer something they want … you generally make money from it … simply because they really enjoy and appreciate what you have offered them, and are willing to pay for it too!

Sure I could get millions of pounds and ‘persuade’ people to ‘think’ they want and need my products, but why would I want to do that when deep down I know that really they hate what I have to offer, and don’t really ‘want’ my product??

Anyhoo, I’m going off on a tangent here, and some of you make think I haven’t really answered the question “How easy is it to start a business” … but like I said in the beginning of this post … I think if you don’t have a hobby, then you don’t have a business idea, and it will be that much harder to start a business ….. get the idea??

Have a good think about it!

Why did we start an ‘online’ business? January 18, 2008

Alot of our friends and family have asked me over the last few months, “why did you start an ‘online’ business” … my response “why not?” !!

From our own point of view we don’t like ‘bricks n mortar’ shops as it’s not nice visiting them when it’s pouring with rain or freezing cold … it’s only nice in the summer, when it’s lovely and warm.

Also, we hate crowds, and in today’s western world it is hard to go anywhere without there being alot of people around too.

We both enjoy the magickal and mystical side of life – fairies, elves, the elements, the spiritual world etc. and I really enjoy jewellery and other items that are a little different and that are based around these themes.

We don’t follow any particular religion, but in-fact we enjoy all of them, we use aspects of many different religions in all areas of our lives — but we do more closely relate to the earthy religions: wiccan, pagan, celtic etc etc

Many times I have wandered around shops looking for an alternative pendant, or a book along these ‘alternative’ themes and I found it so tedious and tiring when I couldn’t find what I was looking for, and came home empty handed … although I’m sure our bank balance breathed a sigh of relief each time! :o)

So, after a few years of using the internet, I realised that this was an ideal world to find the things that I really liked and enjoyed, and it wasn’t long before we both started thinking of business ideas!

Anyway, after saying those few things, people then usually say to us “Well, how do you have the time ?” …

We both do have a ‘normal’ 9-5 job during the week, which is an internet based company too – and we work in a way that when we leave work we really do ‘leave’ work … we never take anything home with us, meaning that we can forget about it and enjoy our life outside of the job.

We normally get home quite quickly as we only live 10 miles away from work, and I find running business¬† (with the help of Mike) almost like a hobby — I obviously enjoy the products we sell, finding out about the history of the makers, the stories behind each product (the design etc) and we also just generally enjoy ‘being’ on the internet too.

Alot of our friends don’t ‘get’ that last bit … ‘being on the internet’ … as they don’t use the net like we do, and there still suspicious of it … well, not us, we’ve been using it since 1996 onwards, so we both have full confidence in it, aslong as we use the same common sense as we would in the real world that is!

We do our banking online, most of the home shopping, we still get our everyday food from real shops as we like fresh and local foods, but anything we can buy online, we do!

We get alot of my entertainment online, our news and lots of other things too, simply because it allows us to be in control of the information.

When the internet first came along it created a massive change in our lives, as finally we could gain access to information we really wanted, and easily too, instead of having to listen to the radio, watch TV or read a few newspapers or books … don’t get me wrong, we enjoy holding a real book or magazine every now and then, but it’s so much better reading them online, and it saves trees too!

It’s just so easy online — and the same goes for running a business — well, if you have the right idea for a business that is … which is something for another post … how easy is it to start a business?

See you next time…
